There are trips you take for the place, and trips you take for the people — and every once in a while, you get the rare one that’s equally about both. Clem and Ryan’s wedding weekend in Clérac was exactly that.
I’ve been to a lot of weddings. (At this stage of life, who hasn’t — my calendar from May to October is basically a tour of other people’s happiest days.) But a wedding in the French countryside hits differently. Everything slows down. The getting-ready morning stretches into a long, lazy afternoon. And then, just as the light goes golden, everyone walks out into château gardens that look like they’ve been waiting centuries for this exact party.
The setting was pure magic — manicured gardens, stone walls covered in blooms, that soft late-summer light that makes everyone look like they’re in a film. And then there was the champagne tower. I have seen champagne towers in movies and on Instagram, but watching one built and poured in real life, in a French château garden, with the sun going down? That’s a core memory. The whole crowd went quiet for the pour and then completely lost it. It’s the kind of moment that reminds you why people still go big for weddings — some things deserve ceremony.
And the dance floor. Oh, the dance floor. You know within the first three songs whether a wedding dance floor is going to deliver, and this one delivered from the first beat to the very last song. The kind of night where your feet hurt, your cheeks hurt from smiling, and you look around at one point and realize every single person you love in one place is on that floor with you. Those nights are rare. You don’t forget them.
What I loved most about the weekend, though, wasn’t any single moment — it was the feeling of being fully, completely present. No phones at the table during dinner (well, mostly). Long conversations with people I hadn’t seen in too long. Wandering the grounds between events with Sally trotting alongside like she owned the place. There’s something about celebrating love in a beautiful place with your favorite people that recalibrates everything. I came home from that weekend feeling like the best version of myself.
Clem and Ryan — if you’re reading this — thank you for the most magical weekend. You know how to throw a party, and more importantly, you know how to bring people together. Wishing you a lifetime of dance floors that good.
From Clérac, we headed deeper into wine country — next up, how to spend a perfect day in Saint-Émilion.
